Pras Michel dropped his lawsuit against Lauryn Hill, his former Fugees bandmate, ahead of serving his prison sentence later this month. The lawsuit accused Hill of “gross mismanagement” and defrauding Michel.
Pras Michel dropped his lawsuit against Lauryn Hill
Attorneys for Michel and Hill said he would drop his lawsuit in a court filing on Wednesday, according to Billboard. It was “dismissed without prejudice, with each party to bear his, her or its own expenses, costs, and attorney’s fees,” according to the motion and as reported by Pitchfork. The dismissal was filed “without prejudice,” which means Michel could choose to refile the same claims against Hill in the future.
The lawsuit was filed in October 2024 and accused Hill of exploiting Michel’s legal troubles to make him agree to a reunion tour. It alleged that Hill ended the Fugees’ 2023 tour early, which Michel said “was actually a veiled and devious attempt to make a big score for herself,” according to People. Michel also accused Hill of canceling the Miseducation anniversary tour in 2024.
The lawsuit also claimed Hill’s “arrogance” and reputation for being late to performances cost him financially. As a result, he sought compensation for lost income, punitive damages and legal expenses via the lawsuit. Some allegations also included that Hill and her touring company MLH, did not pay expenses related to the 2023 tour, such as hotel and credit card bills, as well as payment for musicians and crew members. Hill and MLH had “complete control over the business aspects of the tour, which allowed her to have a total lack of transparency over the tour’s management, including the handling of money,” the lawsuit alleged per People.
Hill shared a statement with Pitchfork when Michel filed the lawsuit. She called it “baseless” and “full of false claims and unwarranted attacks.”
“I’ve been silent and pushing through because I understood that Pras was under duress because of his legal battles and that this was perhaps affecting his judgment, state of mind, and character,” Hill wrote at the time. “I was not in Pras’ life when he decided to make the unfortunate decision that led to his current legal troubles. I did not advise that he make that decision and therefore am in no way responsible for his decision and its consequences, though I have taken it upon myself to help.”
Pras Michel dropped the lawsuit ahead of prison time
Attorneys did not disclose why the lawsuit was dropped on Wednesday. What we know is that Michel is set to serve a 14-year prison sentence starting on March 30, according to Rolling Stone.
In Nov. 2025, Michel was found guilty of criminal conspiracy and illegal foreign lobbying. In 2019, he had been charged with illegally funneling money from Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho into former President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. The case went to trial in 2023, when he was convicted on 10 charges—including conspiracy, concealment of material facts, making false entries in records, witness tampering and serving as an unregistered agent of a foreign power, according to Pitchfork and People.
Michel is currently appealing the verdict and has requested the court to keep him out of prison during the process, according to Billboard.
